18 June 2014 Could your Food product be the next winner of a prestigious Irish Food Award?

The Food Coast Donegal

Donegal Local Enterprise Office is encouraging local entrepreneurs and business owners in the food industry to enter the Blas na hEireann awards in a bid to boost the growing food sector within Donegal.

The food sector has been identified as an emerging sector in Co. Donegal with potential to build and grow employment in the food industry all over the County.

The Blas na hEireann, Irish Food Awards accreditation is the largest competition of its kind in Ireland attracting over 2,000 entries annually and is so widely accredited  that this years deadline for entries into the competition has been extended to June 24.

The Blas Awards aim is to recognise passionate, dedicated producers who create high-quality food and drinks and who are serious about marketing their fantastic products to markets at home and around the globe.  Last year over 2,000 products were blind tasted by a panel of 350 judges to arrive at the ‘best’.

Eve Anne McCarron from the Donegal Local Enterprise Office said “Last year Donegal producers such as Gallaghers  and Mulrines were amongst the cream of the crop at the prestigious Blas na hEireann, Irish Food Awards.  They took Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for some of the best tasting products in the whole of Ireland, all made in Donegal, with locally sourced ingredients”.

She added “this year we are encouraging local producers to enter the Awards by sponsoring a ‘Blas Best in County Donegal’ and a ‘Best in Farmers Market Donegal’ prize to single out the Donegal producers that best tickle the taste buds of this year’s judges”.

The deadline for entry into this year’s competition has been extended to 24th June.  The winning producers will be presented at an Awards Ceremony in Dingle on Saturday 4th October.
